7.4 miles, Level 9 - moderately strenuous. Suitable for advanced hikers.
A peaceful walk to a historic presidential getaway.
The hike to Rapidan Camp is a moderate-strenuous hike that starts at Milam Gap and follows the Mill Prong Trail through the quiet Shenandoah forest. The path descends steadily alongside the tumbling Mill Prong stream, weaving past mossy rocks, small cascades, and Big Rock Falls. We'll traverse Mill Prong three times before we reach the bottom of the valley where the woods open into the historic presidential retreat where Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover spent their summers.
This restful spot provided the couple respite and rejuvenation throughout a tumultuous presidency and was the backdrop for historic meetings during one of our nation's most difficult times: the Great Depression.
At Rapidan Camp you’ll find restored cabins—including the Brown House and the Prime Minister’s Cabin—set beside the confluence of two clear mountain streams, creating a peaceful, tucked‑away setting that feels unchanged since the 1930s.
As with all WWO hikes, there will be a leader and a sweep, and no one will be left behind.
After you complete your registration, you will receive a confirmation email with additional event details and start location.
There is limited space, so please register early. Although this hike is FREE for Premium Members, you do need to register.
