We’ll begin at the Snickers Gap Appalachian Trailhead parking area along Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway). From there, we’ll head out on a section of the Appalachian Trail known as the “roller coaster,” which features a series of steady ups and downs and can be fairly challenging.

After about half a mile, we’ll reach Bear’s Den, where we’ll take in a wide, west-facing view from the overlook. We’ll then continue south on the Appalachian Trail, crossing several ridgelines as we make our way toward the Sam Moore Shelter. Once we reach the shelter, we’ll turn around and retrace our steps back to the trailhead.

There is a water source at the shelter, along with a few streams along the route.
