Log-In
5 miles, Level 9 rating moderately strenuous to strenuous. Suitable for intermediate to advance hikers. The Maryland Heights Trail offers hikers the opportunity to see many aspects of Harpers Ferry NHP in one day: spectacular scenery, geology, Civil War, industrial and transportation history.
This hike features Civil War history including a museum and John Brown's Fort, a key site in an 1859 abolitionist raid. Maryland Heights, which towers 1,448 feet above the town, is the area’s most strenuous and rewarding hike. We’ll pass the remains of fortifications built by Union Forces in 1862. Oh, and there’s the very spectacular overlook with views of Maryland, Virginia, and The Point (the intersection of the Potomac & Shenandoah Rivers). The town of Harpers Ferry has many restored buildings, interesting exhibits, and is home to The Appalachian Trail Visitor Center.
As with all WWO hikes, there will be a leader and a sweep, and no one will be left behind.
After you complete your registration, you will receive a confirmation email with additional event details and start location.
