This hike on the Appalachian Trail offers magnificent views of the valleys and interesting outcrops along the way.  After an initial incline, we’ll hike along the wooded mountain ridge of South Mountain. We will relax, take in the views and have lunch at the scenic White Rocks overlook.  Weather permitting, we will reverse our steps to pick up a side trail that takes us down to the Bear Springs Cabin.  We’ll then return uphill, rather steeply, to White Rocks a second time, and then hike downhill to the parking area.  Gathland State Park features the National War Correspondents Memorial Arch, a large stone monument dedicated to the memory of Civil War correspondents.
