Exploring the Anacostia River Trail (ART) and Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens / Long Bike Ride
Saturday, Jul 10, 2021
9:00am – 2:00pm
31 miles on mostly flat paved trails. Good for intermediate and advanced riders, and advanced beginners ready for a longer ride.
Similar to the 14 mile ride but we double the length of the ride to follow the Anacostia River Trail (ART) into the city. We will start in College Park and loop around the beautiful Lake Artemesia. Then we will ride along the Northwest Branch Trail until we join the Anacostia River Trail. The highlight of our ride will be our visit to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Once the site of a thriving Native American culture (10,000 years ago), the land was bought by Walter Shaw in the 1880’s who turned what was considered unusable farmland into an aquatic garden and commercial enterprise. In 1938, Congress authorized purchase of the land to save it from development and the gardens are now managed by the National Park Service. We will take 20 – 30 minutes to wander among the ponds where the stunning pink lotus flowers should be in full bloom.
We’ll continue on the ART with a short stop at Kingman Island, and ride past the Navy Yard to a rest stop (and lunch) at Potbelly at Yards Park. On our return, we’ll cross the river and ride along Anacostia Park Drive before doubling back on our route. This ride always delights showing unique places in the city. The ride is suitable for all types of bikes. As with all our rides there will be a leader and sweep and no one will be left behind.
