Exploring the Anacostia River Trail and Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens / Short Bike Ride
Saturday, Jul 10, 2021
9:00am – 12:00pm
14 miles on mostly flat paved trails. Good for beginners and advanced beginners.
We will explore the Anacostia River Trail which joins the Anacostia Tributary Trail System, a network of a half-dozen connected trails. We’ll start in College Park and loop around the beautiful Lake Artemesia. Then we will ride along the Northwest Branch Trail until we join the Anacostia River Trail. The highlight of our ride will be our visit to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Once the site of a thriving Native American culture (10,000 years ago), the land was bought by Walter Shaw in the 1880’s who turned what was considered unusable farmland into an aquatic garden and commercial enterprise. In 1938, Congress authorized purchase of the land to save it from development and the gardens are now managed by the National Park Service.
We will take a half hour to wander among the ponds where the stunning pink lotus flowers should be in full bloom. We will then retrace our ride back to the start. The ride is suitable for all types of bikes. As with all our rides there will be a leader and sweep and no one will be left behind.
