6.25 miles, Rating of 5, Suitable for intermediate hikers looking for a challenge and advanced hikers.  The "Yellowstone of the East" will not disappoint on this collection of 3 summit hikes.

Spend a day hiking in the beautiful Shenandoah National Park. We begin at Marys Rock.  Many legends surround the name of this hike, but there's no denying the westward views that it provides of Shenandoah Valley and Massanutten Mountain. We'll hike 2.9 miles on the Meadow Spring Trail and Appalachian Trail. A moderate trail with 830-foot of elevation gain.

Next, we'll travel about 13 miles to Hawksbill Gap parking lot. From here we'll hike to Shenandoah's highest summit at 4,051 feet along the Lower Hawksbill Trail. The viewing platform offers a 360° panoramic view of the Shenandoah Valley, Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Virginia Piedmont. A moderate trail with 690-foot of elevation gain. 

Lastly, we'll travel to Skyland Area for a quick break. Not far is the access point for Stony Man Trail. This is an easier trail that leads to an outstanding view of Shenandoah Valley and Massanutten Mountain and beyond. We'll hike 1.7 miles along the Appalachian Trail with 690-foot of elevation gain. 

As with all WWO hikes, there will be a leader and a sweep, and no one will be left behind.

Kent Island is the largest island in the Chesapeake Bay and was the location of the first European settlement in Maryland. From its earliest inhabitants (Matapeake Indians) to its present-day status as the gateway to the Eastern Shore, Kent Island has played a vital role in the history of Maryland.

Join WWO for a stunning ride on Kent Island. We will travel on the paved bike path that traverses the island, detouring to see neighborhoods, many beautiful water views, a community fishing pier, and a lighthouse. There are multiple stops to admire the views.  Moderate social pace, with a leader and a sweep, and no one will be left behind.

Board members meet quarterly to discuss policy and to focus on the mission, strategy and goals of WWO in an effort to better serve our members and trip participants. These quarterly-scheduled meetings are open to WWO members and we encourage members to get involved!  We invite you to come observe our meetings, particularly if you have always wanted to get more involved with WWO but didn't know where to start.

 Spanning more than 1,100 acres, Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA is one of the world's great gardens.  With vibant tulips, flowering trees and fountain displays, Springtime at Longwood Gardens could be the most spectacular time of the year. 

 Our weekend begins Friday evening when we settle into our cottage right in the heart of  historic Kennett Square.  This charming home has all the modern comforts we need and is the perfect home base to visit Longwood Gardens. There is a loft sleeping space with twin beds, primary bedroom on the main floor, and a sleep sofa in the living room.  After an early breakfast on Saturday, we will drive a short distance to Longwood Gardens where we will stroll the amazing manicured gardens, the spacious Meadow Garden with expansive vistas and native plants, marvel at the lights and fountain shows into the evening. Lunch and dinner may be purchased on site. After breakfast on Sunday morning, we can visit the historic town of Kennett Square before heading home. 

Wear comfortable walking shoes and expect to do a lot of walking!  

Registration fee does not include meals nor the timed entry ticket in the range of $25 to Longwood Gardens. This trip is Friday to Sunday.

45 miles, 3,000 feet in elevation.  A challenging ride on mostly rural roads with a few busy sections. For advanced riders. Must like hills!

Join us for this beautiful ride through the expansive farms and historic villages of Frederick and Carroll Counties. This scenic but hilly ride showcases three historic towns with “union” in their name, the quaint town of New Windsor, and beautiful rolling farmlands. Riding this route seems to take you back to another era as we ride through Uniontown, Union Bridge and Unionville and pass by homes and farms established in the1800’s or earlier. Most of the ride is on quiet country roads but there are a few sections where traffic may be busy. Both the scenery and the hills will take your breath away. We scouted this ride recently and found it to be a winner – if you like hills.

Join us for a great ride in Virginia, near Lorton. This ride visits Gunston Hall, Pohick Bay Regional Park and Mason Neck Park with views of the Potomac River and Belmont Bay. Mason Neck Park is a major refuge for bald eagles, osprey and other birds that migrate through the area. This is also the site of historic Native American settlements and early European settlers. The ride is mostly flat on bike trails with just two hills. Suitable for all bicycle types. As with all WWO rides, we will have a leader and sweep and no one will be left behind.
