Great Allegheny Passage Overnight Bike Ride

Intermediate to advanced riders.

This rail-to-trail connects Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland, MD and is considered one of the best rail trails in the country, passing through small towns, fields and forests. We won’t do the whole trail, but cycle southeast starting in Connellsville, PA covering 30 miles per day. We will meet in Cumberland, MD on Saturday morning and be transported with our bikes, by reserved shuttle to Connellsville (an hour ride) to begin our ride. We’ll stay overnight at Confluence and Meyersdale at Inns and B&Bs. The trail is paved with firmly packed fresh limestone and fairly level. The trip price does not include accomodations, $25 for shuttle or meals. Accomodations will range from $40-$100 per night per person depending on accomodation preference and availability. Dolly Sods Two Day Intermediate Backpacking Trip

We will be hiking in Dolly Sods Wilderness, a slice of the Monongahela National Forest, which has nearly everything: rocky vistas, open glades resembling the western United States, thick spruce, northern hardwood forests, and a deep canyon cut by Red Creek. On this year’s visit to one of our favorite destinations we’ll explore new areas and revisit old ones. If you like camping by a river to splash around in this is the trip for you.

This trip is not recommended for novice backpackers. WWO has a limited amount of equipment that can be loaned, so don’t let a lack of equipment stand in your way.

Sporting Clays

Have you ever seen a movie where someone is standing on the deck of a ship shouting “Pull!” Conjures up a familiar image doesn’t it? Though you won’t be on a cruise ship, you can still take aim for some fun at the Prince Georges County Trap and Skeet Center. We spend the morning with NSCA Certified Instructors who will guide us to the Sporting Clay Course. The Instructors will take us to their covered instruction pavilion where we will learn how to be safe, comfortable and have fun with a shotgun. The targets may “run” across the ground or dart quickly across the sky in front of you. Either way, you’ll put your lessons to the test with this very fun, easy, and safe adventure in the great outdoors.

Participants should dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes that can get dirty. Eye and ear protection will be provided. Your trip fee includes safety training, safety equipment, gun rentals, targets and ammo.

Monroe Run Beginner Backpacking Trip

This one-night trip is perfect for an easy one-night escape from the city. The hike is gentle and tree-covered with multiple stream crossings.

We’ll meet Saturday morning at a Metro stop, then carpool to the trailhead near New Germany State Park in western Maryland. Novice and beginners are welcome. WWO has a limited amount of equipment that can be loaned, so don’t let a lack of equipment stand in your way.

Sky Meadows Day Hike

This is a hilly 5-mile hike with about 1000 feet of elevation gain. Sky Meadows Park is located on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains and encompases nearly 1900 acres of open fields and forests. Expect wintery vistas across meadows and woodlands, with great views of Fauquier County farms and vineyards on the rolling Piedmont plains.

Beginning Paddling Trip

Level: Beginner and above.

This class will cover the basics of paddling whether you choose a canoe, kayak or Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP). This is a beginner class. We will not be setting a shuttle so there is no fear of “holding back the group.” We will cover Boats 101: types, materials, design, and ask the question, what boat is best for me? We will review proper stroke mechanics for all forms of water craft, reading water and weather, transporting your boat or board, and proper clothing and equipment.

This is a great way to try out all types of boats and boards on a flat water section of Antietam Creek or the Brunswick section of Potomac. PFDs, paddles, boats, and boards are provided.

Thurmont Vista, Chimney, and Wolf Rocks Day Hike

We will hike 4.9 miles along a sometimes rocky, moderately strenuous circuit in the National Park, visiting the vistas at Thurmont Vista and Chimney Rock, and the fascinating rock formation known as Wolf Rock. At Wolf Rock, there is an optional rock scramble to see the “wolf.”
